This is a plea that goes out to all venomous snake fans. If you would like to help your fellow humans and animals out, consider becoming a milker. I am not sure if there is an actual term for this, but you are greatly needed. There is such a short supply of the medicine in the US. My cat is in intensive care after having been bitten by a rattlesnake in my backyard. The cost of the anti-venom was $835. I was told that our local supply was so low, that only a very limited supply was being sold for use by vets. Still not sure if we made it in time, but I sure hope we did. Please, consider helping out with our national supply, because we need you!

I rarely watch TV right now as I am in the field all week. I don't have cable, so all I get is Telemundo, PBS, and occasionally Fox or CBS will come through. I live out of town sort of. About my cat, she is doing fine, with only a small patch of necrotic tissue which is slowly peeling off. It looks pretty nasty, and it irritates her, but she is alive and seems to have no serious side-effects!

actually there isn't a shortage of anti venom this year. I'm not sure why your vet would tell you otherwise, maybe that was his justification for charging so much for it. Where do you live I might know where you can get crofab relativly affordable.

I live in Kingsville, TX, and we are surrounded by ranches. We are a little out of the way of the actual cities. All I know is that the amount available locally for animal hospitals was slim, and the vet was upset about his own supply. He told me that it was 50/50 survival WITH the anti-venom given her small size and the apparent size of the rattler. I opted for the price simply because I couldn't live without her. Anyway, I would love to know how long it lasts in a refrigerator, and wether it would be advisable for me to keep diamondback anti-venom in my own home. I do live in the boonies. I could take it with me to the vet or hospital if there was an incident.

You can purchase your own vials of crofab. I did when I started keeping crotalids. And I have naja anti-venom on hand as well. It's just safer that way

                from the doctor...

They keep supplies on hand, for just such an emergency, if you are lucky. I live in an area that is frequented by eastern diamondbacks, therefore we have minimal stocks of the eastern diamondback antivenom in stock at our hospitals and two vets. Most people here do NOT get antivenom for the their animals. Many animals survive bites from a rattler, but they may lose appendages. I have even seen some ranchers allow their horses to get better on their own, with some anitbiotics if anything. My cat means more to me than any animal means to most people in this town. She is also VERY small, and was bitten on the head by a 5 footer at least, judging on the bite radius. The vet said it was a miracle she survived, and they almost didn't want me to spend the money on the medicine because they didn't think she would survive. But since she was medicated within 8 hours of the bite, and was in ICU for three days and was given a lot of TLC, she made it with minimal scarring, and only minor lasting effects. (her head is very sensative at the bite area, but there is no lasting dangerous damage) On a side note, she runs from even the smallest harmless snake now, hehehe.
